SHOOTING IN EGYPT
It was not easy to find my heads of departments that would speak English, as literally no occidental crews are coming to shoot anymore in Egypt since 2013.
But we were very lucky to meet Mohammed Morsi (local gaffer) and Ahmed Baskota (local keygrip) with there quite big crews. I had also my Swiss gaffer Greg Pedat with me but gripwise we worked only with the local crew….
For the recce we were expecting hours of traffic to get to our locations, but we were lucky as we did our prep during Ramadan 2022. During this period traffic is much less!
Then shooting began in Cairo, Fayoum and Alexandria with mostly an Egyptian crew and this was a real adventure……
CHOICE OF LENSES
To achieve a nostalgic look I used the very beautiful Hawk Vintage 74 lenses. I did already used these lenses before on the film YVES SAINT LAURENT. dir. by Jalil Lespert.
They use older coating techniques, resulting in a unique softness with gentle aberrations and lower contrast! This gives a very organic texture and is still precise and consistent!
